Mascino’s Fall Propels Red Raiders to Victory Over Millersville, 31-11

Dec. 6, 2006

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Behind a fall in 1:17 from Shippensburg red-shirt sophomore Rick Mascino (Philadelphia/North Catholic) over Millersville’s Jeremy Brooks, the Red Raiders cruised to a 31-11 victory over the Marauders on Wednesday night at Heiges Field House. Mascino’s fall was the second of five consecutive victories for Shippensburg.

The Red Raiders (2-1) recorded their second dual match victory in as many nights after coming from behind to beat Division III York on Tuesday night, 28-18.

Following Mascino’s fall, senior Mark Murphy (Dillsburg/Northern York) earned a major decision over Millersville junior Steve Funk, 17-4 to improve his record to 4-4 on the season. The win was also his first non-fall victory this year.

Earlier in the evening at 133, freshman Steve Fittery (Denver/Cocalico) easily dispatched of Millersville’s J.J. Lester by technical fall in 5:55, 20-4. For Fittery, it was his second technical fall of the year to go along with four falls and three major decisions. Fittery is now 16-5 this season.

At 149, red-shirt junior Dan Nauman (Middletown/Middletown Area) recorded a takedown at 1:50 to open the scoring against Millersville’s Robert Zavala en route to a 10-0 major decision. Nauman, a returning national qualifier, is now 4-5 on the season.

Some of the more heated competition of the evening came at 165 pounds, where red-shirt sophomore Derek Deutsch (Nazareth/Nazareth) battled the Marauders' Josh Evans in a tight match that would come down to the final seconds. However, Deutsch was able to evade Evans in the final minute to earn a 2-1 decision and give Shippensburg the lead at 12-11.

Deutsch’s decision started the stretch of five Shippensburg victories to close out the match, and following Mascino’s fall and Murphy’s major decision, the Red Raiders also received victories from junior Peter Grodziak (Allentown/Parkland) and red-shirt sophomore Jason Groller (Easton/Easton).

Groller recorded two near falls within the first period and eventually recorded a fall in 6:28 that improved his record on the season to 3-0 and his career record to 7-1.

Shippensburg will have the rest of the month off before the team travels to Fayette, Iowa on January 13 and 14 for the NWCA National Duals, hosted by the University of Northern Iowa.
