Nauman's Major Decision Secures 23-16 Victory Over York

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - With four-straight match wins beginning at 197 pounds, the Shippensburg University wrestling team built a 12-point lead over York College en route to its first dual meet win of the 2005-06 season on Tuesday night in Heiges Field House, 23-16.
The
Red Raiders (1-1) entered the match ranked No. 7 in NCAA Division II
while the Spartans came in ranked ninth in Division III. Last year, the
two
teams battled to a 19-19 tie at York.
Shippensburg gained the advantage in the match, which began at 165 pounds,
after sophomore Peter Grodziak (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) pulled the Red
Raiders to within one point with a 4-1 victory over Matt Chrzanowski.
The win started a string of four-straight for Shippensburg as red-shirt senior Jake Lininger (Camp Hill, Pa./Lower Dauphin), red-shirt junior Jamie Thomas (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) and red-shirt sophomore Darren Murray (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) all earned victories to put the Red Raiders ahead 19-7 with three matches left.
The clincher for Shippensburg came at 149 pounds with the team leading 19-13 when red-shirt sophomore Dan Nauman (Middletown, Pa./Middletown) scored a major decision over Phil DeGaetano. Leading 6-5 after two periods, Nauman broke the match open in the third with a two near falls and a takedown for the 15-5 victory.
2005 NCAA Division III national qualifier at 141 pounds, Tim Bohlman, pulled the Spartans (2-3) to within six points, 19-13, after he won by fall in 3:22 against red-shirt sophomore Tyler Gilson (Mifflin, Pa./Juniata).
Lininger, ranked seventh in Division II, opened his match with a two-point takedown before staying unbeaten this season at 7-0 with his third fall of the season in 1:49. The No. 3-ranked Thomas followed with a dominating performance of Kyle Flickinger 15-5 in which Thomas totaled six takedowns and a reversal. Flickinger scored all five of his points on escapes which Thomas gave him.
Murray scored a 4-0 victory over Steve Sterner after scoring a takedown in the first and reversal in the second.
At 174 pounds, sophomore Rick Mascino (Philadelphia, Pa./North Catholic) won a very tight match, 5-4 in double overtime against Steve Johnston. The match was scoreless through one before Johnston led 3-2 after two periods. Mascino tied it with an escape in the first 10 seconds and then won it with a reversal in the second overtime.
Shippensburg travels to Millersville University on Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m.
