Red Raiders Top York to Earn First Dual Match Victory of Season

YORK, Pa. - With 18 points scored over the final four matches of the evening, the Shippensburg wrestling team earned their first dual match win of the season in come-from-behind fashion, downing York 28-18 Tuesday evening.

Four matches into the evening, York had recorded three wins, two of which by fall to build a 15-6 lead. Kyle Flickinge won 8-2 over red-shirt freshman Andrew Jones (Haverford/Haverford) and at 125, Bill Platt win by fall over freshman Bill Purvis (Green Lane/Souderton) at 141 and Tim Bohlman pinned red-shirt junior Dan Naumann (Middletown/Middletown) in 6:33.

At 157 pounds, red-shirt sophomore Jake Wilson (Carlisle/Carlisle) earned a 12-2 major decision over John Niedrich to cut into York's led. But York's Jerry Browne responded with an 8-4 decision over red-shirt sophomore Derek Deutsch (Nazareth/Nazareth) at 165 pounds.

That would be York‚s final win of the evening, however. Red-shirt junior Rick Mascino (Philadelphia/North Catholic) defeated Hank Conklin 11-5 and 184-pound senior Mark Murphy (Dillsburg/Northern York) earned his team-leading 30th win of the season with a pin of Steve Johnston at 2:03, giving Shippensburg a 19-18 lead.

At 197 pounds, junior Peter Grodziak (Allentown/Parkland) earned a 21-6 technical fall over Chad Finnicchiro at 5:41 and at 285 pounds, red-shirt sophomore Jason Groller (Easton/Easton) sealed the team victory with a 12-3 major decision over Sean Griffin.

Also earning a victory for Shippensburg was 133-pound freshman Steve Fittery (Denver/Cocalico) who pinned Zach Tolbert in 6:31. It was Fittery's 15th win in 20 matches and his fourth fall of the season.

The Red Raiders return to action against PSAC rival Millersville tomorrow night, December 6 at Heiges Field House in the Red Raiders' home opener. The match, which starts at 7:00 p.m., will be the team's lone home match until Friday, February 9.
