Fittery Finishes Third at 133 in 40th Annual East Stroudsburg Open

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. - Freshman Steve
Fittery (Denver/Cocalico) earned Shippensburg’s top individual finish at
the 40th annual East Stroudsburg Open on Saturday afternoon, which featured
over 390 wrestlers in competition. Fittery earned a third-place finish
while wrestling primarily against Division I competition.
After earning victories of 15-1, 4-1 and 3-2 to advance into the semifinals
at 133 pounds, Fittery fell to Kutztown’s Joe Kemmerer, 3-2. Fittery
earned the third-place crown by defeating Chris Notte of Nassau Community
College by a 3-2 score and following that up with a 6-2 defeat over Mike
Grey of the Finger Lakes Wrestling Club.
Another freshman earned the only other Top-8 finish on the day for the
Red Raiders. Freshman David Sunderland (Saltillo/Southern Huntingdon) earned
a seventh-place finish for Shippensburg, culminating his day with a 3-2
victory over East Stroudsburg’s Kyle Heselpoth.
After defeating Jeff Jacobs of Old Dominion in the opening round by a 9-4
margin, Sunderland fell to UPJ’s Archie McConnell, 7-5. However,
Sunderland proceeded to win five more matches on the day in the loser’s
bracket, including a win by fall in 2:30 over Delaware Valley’s Ryan
Herwig and a 2-1 victory in two tiebreakers over fellow Raider wrestler,
redshirt-sophomore Jake Wilson (Carlisle/Carlisle).
Other wrestlers that won matches on the day included redshirt-junior Darren
Murray (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin), redshirt-sophomore Rob
Cross (Milton/Milton Area), redshirt-sophomore Derek Deutsch
(Nazareth/Nazareth), junior Eric
Kauffman (Etters/Red Land), and freshman Adam Stout (Lewistown/Lewistown).
Shippensburg will next return to action on Friday, Dec. 1 at the University
of Pittsburgh-Johnstown. The meet begins at 7 p.m.
