PEMBROKE, N.C. - The Shippensburg University wrestling team had five players advance to the second round, followed by three of those Red Raiders advancing to the third round on the opening day of the 2007 NCAA Division II East Regional, being held at the University of North Carolina-Pembroke on Friday.

Red-shirt sophomore Jason Groller (Easton/Easton) recorded a 4-1 decision as the #2 seeded heavy weight over Adrian Young of St. Andrew Presbyterian College in the opening round. He followed up that performance by pinning Kutztown's Rich Dalmas in 4:15. Also seeded #2 in the 141 lb. weight class, freshman Steven Fittery (Denver/Cocalico) pinned Anthony DiCarlo of Anderson University and Brandon Bradley of UNC-Pembroke to advance to the semifinals. After a first-round bye, senior Mark Murphy (Dillsburg/Northern York), a third #2 seed, pinned Wanzer Morgan of American International in 2:36.

Advancing for Shippensburg into round two were #4 seeded red-shirt junior Daniel Nauman (Middletown/Middletown Area) with a win over Justin Bates of Belmont Abbey College in the 149 lb. weight class, before losing to Kutztown's Chris Chambers by 11-5 decision. In the 157 lb. weight class, #5 seeded red-shirt sophomore Jake Wilson (Carlisle/Carlisle) defeated William Ray of Anderson University before losing to Adam Phillips by a 4-2 decision.

In the 174 lb class, red-shirt sophomore Rick Macino (Philadelphia/North Catholic) earned a first round bye, but then lost by a 12-4 major decision to West Liberty State's Tommy Clark. Nauman, Wilson, and Macino each won their consolation matchups to keep their respective third-place chances alive.

Not advancing for the Red Raiders were red-shirt sophomore Kirby Fanus (Mt. Holly Springs/Boiling Springs) and red-shirt junior Darren Murray (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin) who both were pinned in the opening round. Fanus fell in his consolation matchup, but Murray advanced to the next round of the 133 lb. third-place bracket.

The 2007 NCAA Division II East Regionals continue on Saturday in two sessions, each slated to begin at 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
