Seventh-Ranked Wrestling Opens Weekend Road Trip With 23-18 Loss at No. 10 Mercyhurst
Feb. 10, 2005
ERIE, Pa. - The Mercyhurst College wrestling team scored 19 unanswered
points from 149 through 174 pounds and held on to defeat Shippensburg University
23-18 Friday night before 350 fans at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center. The
Red Raiders, ranked No. 7 in the latest Division II rankings, dropped their
third-straight match after having won five-straight while the 10th-ranked
Lakers won their eighth-straight match.
After senior Alex Renn (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) picked up an upset 13-6
decision at 141 pounds over eighth-ranked J.J. Zanetta, Shippensburg (8-7)
held a 6-4 lead. Fifth-ranked red-shirt junior Jamie Thomas (Mechanicsburg,
Pa./Cumberland Valley) also picked up a win at 125 pounds, his 21st of the
season, with a 7-5 decision over Payne Lint.
Trailing by two points, Mercyhurst (13-7) got a technical fall from Don Cummings
at 149, back-to-back pins from Will Tedder and Zack Schafer and a decision
from Hudson Harrison at 174 to open a commanding 23-6 lead. The Lakers had
a point deducted after Tedder's win at 157 pounds for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Shippensburg won the final three matches, but could not overcome the 17-point
deficit. At 184 pounds, third-ranked junior Mark Murphy (Dillsburg,
Pa./Northern York) posted his 12th win in his last 14 matches with a 5-3 decision over
Frank Zatta.
Senior Corey Jacoby (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic), ranked fourth at 197
pounds, picked up his 22nd win and sixth fall with a pin of Paul Bergman
in 1:42 before red-shirt senior Jake Lininger (Camp Hill, Pa./Lower
Dauphin),
ranked second at heavyweight, totaled his team-leading 23rd win of the season
with a 5-0 decision over Nick Marcellino. With the win, Lininger improved
to a perfect 14-0 in dual matches.
The Red Raiders return to action on Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m., when
they travel to Gannon University.
