Red Raiders Edged by Division I East Stroudsburg; Jacoby Moves into Third-Place in Career Wins
Feb. 7, 2005
EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. - A win at 174 by Dave Sullivan proved to be the
difference as Division I East Stroudsburg University edged out a 25-13 victory
over the Shippensburg University wrestling team, ranked No. 8 in the Division
II rankings, Wednesday night at Koehler Fieldhouse.
The loss was the first action for the Red Raiders (8-6) since the Pennsylvania
State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships held on January 28 at Slippery
Rock University. The match was the first dual competition for Shippensburg
since the East Coast Duals on January 21.
After Sullivan posted a 6-1 decision over Red Raider sophomore Rick
Mascino (Philadelphia, Pa./North Catholic), the Warriors (10-7) held a commanding
22-6 lead heading into the final three matches. Ironically for Sullivan,
it was his 22nd win of the season.
Sophomore Peter Grodziak (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) and senior Corey
Jacoby (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) each notched victories at 184 and 197 pounds,
respectively, but Shippensburg still needed nine points heading into the
final bout at heavyweight where Adam Karasevicz handed red-shirt freshman Jason
Groller (Easton, Pa./Easton) his first loss of the season, 4-3.
Grodziak picked up his 10th overall win of the year with a 7-4 decision before
Jacoby picked up his team-high sixth major decision of the season with a
10-1 victory over Sean McCracken.
Jacoby, ranked third in the nation, boosted his season record to 21-5 overall,
10-2 in dual matches. His career win total now stands at 106, moving him
into sole possession of third-place on the career list at Shippensburg. Terry
Lauver (1980-85) holds the Red Raider career record with 145 wins while Glenn
Burket (1974-78) is in second with 120.
Red-shirt junior Jamie Thomas (Mechanicsburg, Pa/Cumberland Valley) got things
started for the Red Raiders with a 7-3 decision over Matt Swallow at 125
pounds. The win was the eighth-straight and 20th of the season for Thomas
who missed competing in the PSAC Championships because of an injury.
Senior Alex Renn (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) battled Kyle Ferris to a scoreless
tie at 141 pounds through two periods before Ferris escaped seven seconds
into the third period for a 2-0 victory. At 149 pounds, red-shirt sophomore
Dan Nauman (Middletown, Pa./Middletown) posted his 16th victory of the season
and his 10th in dual matches with a 7-4 decision over Alex Bimes.
In suffering his first loss, Groller led 3-2 with 13 seconds remaining in
the third period before Karasevicz scored a two-point takedown for the victory.
Meanwhile, red-shirt freshman Matt Wills (Cresson, Pa./Penn Cambria) appeared
in his first match of the 2005-06 season, falling in 3:27 to Nate Nauroth
at 133 pounds.
Tuesday's match was the first of five matches over a nine-day period for
Shippensburg that includes four in a six-day span against some of the top
competition in Division II, all on the road. The Red Raiders resume competition
on February 10 when they travel to 13th-ranked Mercyhurst College. From there,
the team will go to No. 20 Gannon University (Feb. 11) and No. 19 West Liberty
State College (Feb. 12) before ending the road trip at Kutztown University
on February 15.
