Jan. 30, 2008
SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Red-shirt senior Dan Nauman (Middletown/Middletown) recorded a fall in 6:21 to highlight four victories for the Shippensburg wrestling team Wednesday evening on Senior Night inside Heiges Field House. The visiting Aggies of Delaware Valley earned a 24-16 victory over Shippensburg as the Red Raiders honored four wrestlers who were participating in their final home match.
In addition to Nauman, Shippensburg recognized the efforts of Pete Grodziak (Allentown/Parkland), Rob Cross (Milton/Milton) and Kirby Fanus (Mt. Holly Springs/Boiling Springs) before the match. The quartet has combined for 114 wins over the course of the last four years with the Red Raiders.
Nauman trailed 7-3 after the first period but responded with a three-point takedown and a near fall to tie the score at 9-9 after two periods. He nearly pinned Ryan Herwig at the end of the second period but the whistle sounded to end the frame.
The senior yielded another takedown in the third period before returning the favor and ultimately earning the victory by fall with 39 seconds remaining in the match.
At 197 pounds, Grodziak kept his match close to the vest and dispatched of Joe West 6-2 to earn his 16th victory of the season, tying him with Nauman for second on the team. After a scoreless first period, Grodziak earned a takedown in the second period and recorded a final takedown in the last 30 seconds to cement the victory after leading by just one point.
Sophomore Steve Fittery (Denver/Cocalico), who leads Shippensburg in victories this season, closed off the night with a hard-fought 4-3 decision over Dan Hall. Fittery is now 18-3 this season and has amassed a career record of 38-5 at 141 pounds.
The other victory for the Red Raiders on the evening came at 174 pounds, where red-shirt freshman Chris Barrick (Carlisle/Big Spring) totaled six takedowns in the first period en route to an 18-4 major decision over Mike DiGregorio.
