Fittery, Nauman Perfect at East Coast Duals, Fittery Earns Career Win No. 50
Jan. 26, 2008
PEMBROKE, N.C. - Shippensburg University wrestling sophomore Steve Fittery (Denver/Cocalico) picked up his 50th career victory as he posted a perfect 4-0 record at 141 pounds while helping the Red Raiders to a 3-1 record Saturday at the East Coast Duals hosted by UNC Pembroke.
Shippensburg (6-2) began the day with a 38-9 victory over Anderson (S.C.) before dropping Belmont Abbey, 25-15. After a tightly contested 23-13 loss to No. 18 Limestone, the Red Raiders finished with another tight match, defeating host UNC Pembroke, 23-19.
In his second season at Shippensburg, Fittery has totaled a 53-10 overall record which includes a mark of 17-3 this season. He has a record of 37-5 at 141 pounds after going 20-2 and finishing second at last year’s NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships.
Ranked second in the nation, Fittery earned his 50th victory with a 5-0 decision over Anthony DiCarlo of Anderson (S.C.) in his first match. Fittery outscored his opponents 38-7 on Saturday including a technical fall over Riley Pike of 18th-ranked Limestone, 17-0.
Red-shirt senior Dan Nauman (Middletown/Middletown) also posted four victories at 157 pounds to improve his season record to 15-7 which is just four wins shy of his career-high of 19 set during the 2005-06 season when he qualified for the NCAA championships.
Two of Nauman’s victories on the day came by fall, giving a team-leading five this season. He opened the day with a fall in just 1:10 over Isaac Stovall of Anderson (S.C.) before ending his afternoon with a fall in 4:50 over Rashaad Saunders of host UNC Pembroke.
In addition to the eight wins recorded by Fittery and Nauman, the Red Raiders had four other wrestlers combine for 12 wins after each posting 3-1 records.
Red-shirt freshman Chris Barrick (Carlisle/Big Spring) totaled all three of his wins at 174 pounds by fall, major decision and technical fall to improve his record this season to 15-4. He is currently second on the team in falls behind Nauman with four while leading the team with four tech falls and five major decisions.
Red-shirt junior Jake Wilson (Carlisle/Carlisle), red-shirt sophomore Jon Hade (New Oxford/Bermudian Springs) and senior Peter Grodziak (Allentown/Parkland) also went 3-1 on Saturday as Shippensburg won 23 of its 36 contested matches.
The Red Raiders forfeited three matches at 133 and one at 125.
Red-shirt freshman Andrew Jones (Haverford/Haverford) went 2-2 on Saturday, including 2-1 at 125 pounds. After winning back-to-back matches at 125, he moved up a weight class against Limestone, losing to Brent Clausing 5-2 before dropping his final match Joe Mavins of UNC Pembroke at 125.
Fittery currently leads the team with 17 wins, followed by Nauman, Barrick and Grodziak, all of whom have 15. Hade is close behind with 13.
In exhibition action on Saturday, red-shirt freshman Nate Reese (Lewistown/Indian Valley) went 2-0 posting a 13-4 major decision over Jordan Denmark of Anderson (S.C.) and a 5-0 victory over Belmont Abbey’s Jerami Bartley.
Sophomore Bill Purvis (Green Lane/Souderton) went 1-1 for the Red Raiders while red-shirt freshman David Sunderland (Saltillo/Southern Huntingdon) also picked up an exhibition victory.
Shippensburg returns home for its final home match of the season on Wednesday when the team welcomes Delaware Valley to Heiges Field House for Senior Day. Competition begins at 7:00 p.m., with Nauman, Grodziak, Rob Cross (Milton/Milton) and Kirby Fanus (Mt. Holly Springs/Boiling Springs) being honored prior to the match.
