Grodziak’s Decision at 197 Propels Red Raiders to 22-15 Victory at Millersville

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - Senior Pete Grodziak (Allentown/Parkland) ensured a victory for the Shippensburg University wrestling team on Wednesday with a 12-9 decision at 197 pounds that propelled the Red Raiders to a 22-15 win over Millersville inside Pucillo Gymnasium. It is the third consecutive dual meet victory for Shippensburg this season.

Shippensburg (3-1) entered the matchup at 197 pounds trailing the Marauders 15-13, but Grodziak outlasted Millersville’s Ray Bennett to improve his record to 12-7 and give Shippensburg a 16-15 lead.

Red-shirt freshman Jon Rhone (Chambersburg/Chambersburg) then won the match at heavyweight via forfeit to end the evening.

With the exception of forfeits at 133 pounds and heavyweight, every single weight class came down to a decision except 174 pounds, where red-shirt freshman Chris Barrick (Carlisle/Big Spring) improved to 12-2 with a 16-7 major decision over Jeremy Brooks. It is Barrick’s second consecutive major decision in a dual meet.

Red-shirt freshman Andrew Jones (Haverford/Haverford) opened the match with a 5-2 decision over John Andel that marked his sixth victory in his last seven matches.

At 141 pounds, sophomore Steve Fittery (Denver/Cocalico) recorded his 49th career victory and improved to 13-3 with a 6-2 decision over Mike Greck.

Additionally, red-shirt junior Jake Wilson (Carlisle/Carlisle) won a 3-1 decision at 165 pounds over Dave Morey.

Shippensburg will return to action this Saturday when the team competes in the 2008 East Coast Duals hosted by the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. Competition is set to begin at 9:00 a.m.
