Lininger Sets School Record with Six-Second Pin; Murphy Extends Fall Streak to Five
Jan. 21, 2005
SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Shippensburg University wrestling red-shirt senior Jake
Lininger (Camp Hill, Pa./Lower Dauphin) set a new school record for the fastest
pin, defeating A.J. Scales of Belmont Abbey College in just six seconds for
his team-leading 19th win and eighth fall of the season while the seventh-ranked
Red Raiders won their fifth consecutive dual match, posting a 4-1 record
at this weekend's East Coast Duals.
On Saturday, Shippensburg posted victories over Belmont Abbey 50-6 and the
University of North Carolina-Pembroke 41-9 before losing to fellow Pennsylvania
institution Delaware Valley College 24-21in the final match of the weekend.
Lininger, who came to Shippensburg (9-5) from the University of Minnesota
this year, commented that one of his goals this season was to set the new
school record for the fastest pin. He delivered on that promise by surpassing
the old record of 14 seconds and now has totaled a mark of 19-2 in two months
with the Red Raiders after he posted a 67-34 record in three seasons of NCAA
Division I competition.
With five victories this weekend, junior Mark Murphy (Dillsburg,
Pa./Northern York) improved his season record to 14-5 while raising his season fall total
to seven after recording all five victories via pin. He is now one fall behind
Lininger's team-high total of eight.
Two-time All-American red-shirt junior Jamie Thomas (Mechanicsburg,
Pa./Cumberland Valley) also posted a perfect record this weekend, going 6-0 with three decisions,
one fall, one major decision and one forfeit.
In a rematch of last year's dual with Delaware Valley, senior Corey
Jacoby (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) was pinned for the first time this season
at 197 pounds, losing to Jamall Johnson in 5:54. Last year, Jacoby, the 2005
NCAA Division II national champion at 197, edged out a hard-fought 9-8 victory
over Johnson at the East Coast Duals. Johnson was the runner-up at 197 pounds
at the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships.
As for the team, Shippensburg set a season-high with 50 points in the team's
win over Belmont Abbey after the Red Raiders totaled four falls, three forfeits
and one technical fall. In addition to Lininger's pin, senior Alex
Renn (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) picked up a fall in 1:26 over Tony Butler while Murphy.
Red-shirt sophomore Dan Nauman (Middletown, Pa./Middletown) also had a pin
at 149 pounds over Tony Viola and sophomore Rick Mascino (Philadelphia,
Pa./North Catholic) recorded a tech fall, 20-2, against Tim Stanton.
Against North Carolina-Pembroke, the Red Raiders again dominated for the
second-straight match, scoring three more falls, two forfeits and a tech
fall.
Shippensburg will now have the week off to prepare for the Pennsylvania State
Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships next weekend, hosted by Slippery
Rock University.
