Fittery Wins Four as Red Raiders Go 1-3 at East Coast Duals

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - Despite
a perfect 4-0 record from freshman Steve Fittery (Denver/Cocalico), the Shippensburg
University wrestling team finished 1-3 at the 2007 East Coast Duals held
at the University
of Pittsburgh-Johnstown on Saturday.
Fittery won all four of his matches at the duals, improving his overall record
to 23-5 on the season, including 7-0 at 141 pounds. Jake Wilson (
Carlisle/Carlisle) finished 3-1 at 157 pounds to help pace the Red Raiders, each by decision.
In the first match, Delaware Valley defeated the Red Raiders 22-16. Early
decision victories came for red shirt junior Darren Murray (Harrisburg/Central
Dauphin) at 133 pounds, and Fittery at 141 pounds. Shippensburg would take
the lead with
a 9-0 major
decision by red-shirt sophomore Kirby Fanus (Mt. Holly Springs/Boiling
Springs) at 165 pounds, but Shippensburg could not hold on, winning only once in their
last four.
The Red Raider’s struggles continued through the second match, falling
to Newberry College in the next round, 17-15. Fittery defeated Tony Washington
by injury default to capture his second match of the day. Red-shirt sophomore
Jason Groller (Easton/Easton) won his match at 285 pounds by decision, but
that was not enough for Shippensburg
to come back.
Against Carson-Newman, Shippensburg suffered its hardest loss yet, a 28-9
setback. Fittery’s great day continued, with a fall over Kent Pierson
at 4:32.
In the final match, the Red Raiders were able to pull out a victory, 23-19
over Limestone. Fittery won by 18-0 technical fall, and Wilson pinned Dustin
Leutz in 1:48. At 197 pounds, junior Pete Grodziak (Allentown/Parkland) pinned
Mike Walsh in 4:41.
Shippensburg’s record in dual matches now stands at 3-6 on the season.
The Red Raiders return to action on Friday, January 26 for the PSAC Championships
at Bloomsburg University. The championships will last through Friday and
Saturday.
