Shippensburg Wrestling Wins Third-Straight, Jacoby Earns 100th Career Win
Jan. 20, 2005
SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - The No. 7-ranked Shippensburg
University wrestling team won its first two matches at the East Coast Duals
on Friday night at Heiges Field House, defeating Newberry College 31-16
and Limestone College 36-10. Senior Corey Jacoby (Hanover, Pa./Delone
Catholic) won both of his matches on the evening and now has 101 wins for his career.
Jacoby is just the fifth wrestler in school history to reach 100 career
wins and the first since Jeff Putt in 2000 to do so. With his current career
record standing at 101-20, he needs just four more wins to tie Putt and
Drew Krapf for third-place on the all-time list at 105. With his win by
fall in 6:13 over Newberry's Dave Bush, Jacoby moved into a tie for sixth-place
on the school's career falls list with 27, tying him with Frank Myers (1970-74)
and Jason Moyer (1997-2000).
Against Newberry, Jacoby was one of four wrestlers to earn falls as the
Red Raiders (6-4) broke open a 13-10 lead into a 31-10 margin. All four
falls came consecutively for Shippensburg after junior Mark Murphy
(Dillsburg, Pa./Northern York) gave the team a three-point lead with a fall in 2:50
over Leighton Ellis.
Red-shirt senior Jake Lininger (Camp Hill, Pa./Lower Dauphin) followed
Jacoby with a pin of Kelly Anundson in just 1:14. For Lininger, it was
his team-leading sixth fall of the season. After Lininger, red-shirt junior
Jamie Thomas (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) pinned Chauncey McElheney
in 1:58 for his second fall this year.
All four Red Raider wrestlers have combined for 59 wins this season and
17 falls.
Against Newberry, Shippensburg started out with a 7-0 lead after an 8-6
win by senior Alex Renn (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) at 141 pounds and a major
decision by red-shirt sophomore Dan Nauman (Middletown, Pa./Middletown) at 149.
In Shippensburg's second match on Friday against Limestone, the team jumped
out to a 10-0 lead after three-straight wins by Renn, Nauman and sophomore
Eric Kauffman (Etters, Pa./Red Land). Nauman posted his second consecutive
victory by major decision against Limestone, defeating Joey Federspiel,
14-2.
After Joby Shreckhise posted Limestone's only contested victory at 165,
the Red Raiders won the next five-straight matches in building an insurmountable
36-4 lead after two falls from Murphy and Lininger, a 6-0 decision by Thomas
and a forfeit for Jacoby.
Shippensburg returns to action Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m., when it
faces Belmont Abbey College who went 0-2 on Friday night with losses to
West Liberty State College and Gannon University. Action in the 2006 East
Coast Duals hosted by Shippensburg, resumes at 9:00 a.m., with six matches.
