Seventh-Ranked Wrestlers Finish in Eighth-Place at National Duals

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The seventh-ranked Shippensburg University wrestling team earned an eighth place finish at the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA)/Cliff Keen National Duals being held at the University of Northern Iowa this weekend after falling to the University of Nebraska-Kearney by a score of 26-14 on Sunday. The Red Raiders finished the weekend with a 2-3 record.

The Lopers of Nebraska-Kearney would lead from the start of the match after winning matches at 125, 133 and 141 pounds to stake themselves to an 11-0 lead. In a battle of the top-two wrestlers at 125 pounds, No. 2-ranked Trevor Charbonneau defeated No. 1-ranked junior Jamie Thomas (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) in a 3-2 decision.

Shippensburg (3-4) was paced by wins from senior Jake Lininger (Camp Hill, Pa./Lower Dauphin) and junior Mark Murphy (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern York). The No. 6-ranked Lininger defeated Tervel Dlagnev in the final match of the day by a 6-4 decision, while the No. 2-ranked Murphy earned his fourth victory since returning from injury by recording an 11-2 major decision over Paul Sutton.

The Red Raiders also earned victories from red-shirt sophomore Dan Nauman (Middletown, Pa./Middletown), who recorded a 7-1 decision at 149 pounds over Matt True, and sophomore Rick Mascino (Philadelphia, Pa./North Catholic), who defeated Dan Hospodka by a 16-6 decision.

The clinching victory for Nebraska-Kearney came at 197 pounds, where No. 1-ranked senior Corey Jacoby (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) was defeated by No. 3-ranked Jeff Sylvester. Sylvester earned the victory with a 7-5 decision in overtime.

Shippensburg will return to action at home this Wednesday against Division III Unievrsity of Scranton. The match from Heiges Field House will begin at 7:00 p.m.
