Red Raiders Rebound With Exhibition Victory Over Minnesota State-Moorehead

FAYETTE, Iowa - After two losses at the National Duals on Saturday afternoon in Iowa, the Red Raider wrestlers rebounded to earn an exhibition victory over Minnesota State University-Moorehead to improve its dual meet record to 3-3 for the season.

Freshman Steve Fittery (Denver/Cocalico) improved to 19-5 overall on the season and 3-0 while wrestling at 141 pounds by defeating Kelly Janke by fall in 3:20. Red-shirt junior Darren Murray (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin), who took over for Fittery at 133 pounds, earned a 4-2 decision over Troy McFarland.

Shippensburg was trailing after at 165 pounds but won the last four matches to earn a 24-21 victory. At 174 pounds, red-shirt sophomore Rick Mascino (Philadelphia/North Catholic) defeated Tyler Tubbs in a 6-2 decision and was followed by senior 184 pounder and the No. 2-ranked wrestler in Division II Mark Murphy (Dillsburg/Northern York) defeating Matt Nelson 7-3.

Following Murphy's decision, junior Peter Grodziak (Allentown/Parkland) recorded a fall over Josiah Bush in 1:16 to tie the score, and red-shirt sophomore heavyweight Jason Groller (Easton/Easton) notched his fifth win of the season with a 3-2 win over Joe Facchinni to clinch the win for Shippensburg.

The team returns to action on Sat., Jan. 20 at Pittsburgh-Johnstown in the East Coast Duals. Their opening match is scheduled for 9 a.m. against Delaware Valley.
