Red Raiders Fall to No. 6 Fort Hayes State on Day One of National Duals

FAYETTE, Iowa - Shippensburg freshman Steve Fittery (Denver/Cocalico) posted a 2-0 record, but No. 6-ranked Fort Hayes State and No. 20-ranked Chadron State each handed losses to the Red Raiders, eliminating them from competition after one day at the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals.

In the opening round, Shippensburg managed victories in three matches and fell 27-12 to Fort Hayes State. Fittery, wrestling at 141 pounds after winning 16 matches at 133 pounds this season, pinned Josh Pfannenstiel in 4:02. Red-shirt sophomore Derek Deutsch (Nazareth/Nazareth), at 165 pounds, earned a 7-3 win over Phil Hart. Senior 184 pounder and the No. 2-ranked wrestler in Division II Mark Murphy (Dillsburg/Northern York) defeated No. 8-ranked Mike Howell, 3-1.

With the first round loss, Shippensburg moved into the consolation round to take on Chadron State, which fell to No. 3 Minnesota-Mankato in the first round.

Ship wrestlers won four matches and picked up 12 points, but Chadron State received one major decision and won two matches by fall on its way to a 28-13 win.

Shippensburg received a 10-2 major decision victory from red-shirt junior Darren Murray (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin) at 133 pounds. Fittery picked up his second win of the day, defeating Skylair Lappe, 8-5. At 174 pounds, red-shirt sophomore Rick Mascino (Philadelphia/North Catholic) defeated Matt Weingard, 7-5. Red-shirt sophomore heavyweight Jason Groller (Easton/Easton) notched his fourth win of the season with a 10-4 win over Shane Odell.

The losses drop the Red Raiders’ dual meet record to 2-3 on the season. The team returns to action on Sat., Jan. 20 at Pittsburgh-Johnstown in the East Coast Duals. Their opening match is scheduled for 9 a.m. against Delaware Valley.
