Wrestling's Jacoby Named PSAC Winter Top Ten Award Winner
May 5, 2005
SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Shippensburg University wrestling junior Corey Jacoby (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) was named one of 10 Winter Top Ten Award winners named by the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) on Thursday. Jacoby, the first wrestling national champion in the school’s history, is the 16th Shippensburg athlete to win the award since it began in 1997.
A marketing major, Jacoby has earned a 3.43 grade point average while winning the Division II national championship at 197 pounds. He won two tournaments this season and finished second in three others including the PSAC Championship and the NCAA Northeast Regional.
Jacoby completed the season with an overall record of 30-3, with all three loses coming in overtime. He totaled 12 falls, four major decisions and one technical fall. Jacoby is a two-time All-American, finishing fourth in the nation in 2004, and holds a career record of 81-17 with 23 falls and 11 major decisions.
The Top Ten Awards, selected by the conference’s sports information directors, recognize student-athletes who distinguish themselves in the classroom, as well as in the arena of competition. The conference designates Top Ten Award winners after each of the sports seasons: fall, winter and spring.
To be a candidate for the Top Ten Awards, a student-athlete must have achieved a minimum of a 3.25 cumulative grade point average and must be a starter or key reserve with legitimate athletic credentials. Only student-athletes from the winter sports season, including wrestling, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s swimming and men’s and women’s indoor track and field are eligible for the Winter Top Ten Awards.
Earlier this year, John Kuhn (York, Pa./Dover) was named as a Fall Top Ten Award winner, the first and only Shippensburg male student-athlete to win the award twice.
