Doughty, Pierce Chosen All-PSAC Eastern Division Second Team
Nov. 16, 2005
SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Shippensburg University volleyball senior Michelle Doughty (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) and junior Missy Pierce (Valparaiso, Ind./West Aurora (Ill.)) were named to the All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division Second Team on Wednesday. It was the second career postseason honor for Doughty and the third-straight for Pierce.
Doughty also received All-PSAC Eastern Division Second Team honors in 2003. This season, she led the team in kills with 354 while posting a team-high .225 hitting percentage. She was also second on the team in digs with 588 and earned PSAC Eastern Division Player of the Week on October 25.
Doughty became the school’s career digs leader, finishing her career with 1,683. She also became just the second player in school history, joining former teammate Alyssa Kilgore, to record 1,000 kills and digs in a career. Doughty ends her career with 1,068 kills.
Pierce, who was an All-PSAC Eastern Division First Team selection
last year and Second Team honoree in 2003, led the team in digs per game
at 5.25 per
game and was second in total digs despite
missing
11 matches due to injury. In three seasons, Pierce has totaled 863 kills and
1,433 digs. Her career digs is second all-time in school history while she
is fourth in kills.
In 2004, Pierce set a school, single-season record for digs with 512 before the mark was broken this year.
Shippensburg just missed making its third-straight PSAC tournament appearance after spending most of the season tied for first-place in the Eastern Division. The team's 22 wins this year exceeded last season’s total of 21, set by the team that won the Eastern Division championship and finished second to Lock Haven in the conference tournament.
The Lady Raiders will lose Doughty to graduation for next season, but are slated to return 11 players, inlcuding seven players who appeared in at least 102 of the team's 141 games.
