Shippensburg's Pierce Named All-PSAC East for Fourth Time, Young Named Rookie of the Year

volleyball senior Missy Pierce (Valparaiso, Ind./West Aurora (Ill.)) was
named All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East Eastern Division
First Team and freshman Cindel Young (McConellsburg/Broadfording
Christian Academy) was named PSAC East Rookie of the Year.
It is the fourth-straight season in which Pierce has earned All-PSAC East
honors, making her the first Lady Raider in program history to be a four-time
All-PSAC selection. Including the 2004 season, it is her second first team
selection.
Pierce finished the 2006 season ranked first on the team in games played
(121), kills (411), service aces (50) and digs (469). Pierce's 3.40 kills
per
game average ranked ninth in the PSAC. She also ranked ninth in assists.
Not only did Pierce lead her 2006 squad to a school record 24 victories, she
also capped her career as the school‚s career digs leader with 1,899. She
also finished second on the all-time kills list with 1,242, finishing just 97
kills shy of Alyssa Kilgore's 1,339. Pierce is also just the third player
in Shippensburg history with 1,000 digs and kills.
Meanwhile, Young became the first Shippensburg player to win PSAC East Rookie
of the Year since Lisa Garey in 1994. Young was also named All-PSAC Eastern Division
Second Team. She was one of just three freshmen and the only one in the Eastern
Division to earn a spot on the all-conference team.
Young finished the season as the team leader and ranked tenth in the PSAC with
a .301 hitting percentage. She also ranked first on the team in blocks per game
(0.81) to go along with the fourth-best kills per game total at 2.34.
On Oct. 3, Young was the first freshman of 2006 to be named PSAC Eastern Division
Player of the Week.
