Volleyball Wins PSAC East Title With 3-1 Victory at Kutztown
Oct. 30, 2007
KUTZTOWN,
Pa. – For the second time in the last four years, the
Shippensburg University women's volleyball team has captured the PSAC
Eastern Division championship following Tuesday night's 30-26, 18-30,
30-27, 30-23 victory over Kutztown at Keystone Hall.
The win was the third-straight for the Lady Raiders (29-10, 9-0 PSAC
East) who are now just one win away from becoming the first team in
school history to win 30 matches in a season and the second to finish
its conference schedule undefeated. The 1990 Lady Raiders finished
the season 10-0 in divisional play en route to the program's first
PSAC Eastern Division title.
The victory was also the second time in the last three seasons that
Shippensburg has swept the season series with Kutztown who has three
of the last five PSAC East championships. The Golden Bears won divisional
titles in 2003, 2005 and 2006 while the Lady Raiders were the division's
top team in 2004 and 2007.
Sophomore Colleen Toomey (Reading/Muhlenberg) led the way against Kutztown
with a team-high 15 kills, along with eight digs and one service ace.
Red-shirt sophomore Brittany Roche (Morrisville/Pennsbury) totaled
her team-leading eighth double double of the season with 13 kills and
14 digs while adding five block assists.
Meanwhile, sophomore Cindel Young (McConnellsburg/Broadfoarding Christian) just
missed her first career double-double with eight kills and 10 blocks, including
nine block assists. She now has totaled 89 block
assists in 39 matches this season to set a new school record for a
single-season, passing Aimee Strine who had 88 in 1988.
Sophomore Kali Antolik (Johnstown/Westmont Hilltop) added nine kills
to raise her season total to 409, tying her with Alyssa Kilgore who
also totaled 409 kills in 2004, which is the third-highest single-season
total in school history. She is now just two shy of tying current assistant
coach Missy Pierce for the second-most at 411. Pierce totaled 411 kills
as a senior a year ago. The school record for kills in a single-season
is 489 set by Jenn Fuhman in 2000.
Meanwhile, junior Maureen DuVall (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) totaled
three kills, 42 assists and 25 digs which is five short of her career-high
of 30 set on Oct. 18, 2004 in a 3-2 victory over Kutztown at home.
With her 42 assists, DuVall now has 1,297 this season, breaking her
own school single-season record of 1,270 set in 2005. She now has 3,161
in her career, just 68 behind Amber Schmerfeld's record of 3,229.
Defensively, junior Kelsi Hoffman (York/West York) totaled 16 digs
and now has 464 this season, the seventh-highest single-season total
in school history.
As a result of Shippensburg's PSAC Eastern Division title, the Lady
Raiders have earned the right to host the 2007 PSAC Volleyball Championship
November 9-10 at Heiges Field House.
Before that, Shippensburg will
celebrate Senior Day on Saturday when it hosts Cheyney beginning at
1:00 p.m. Prior to the match, the team will honor its lone senior in
Mandy Taylor (Hanover/South Western).
