Helfrick Leads Lady Raiders To Ninth-Straight Win in Tri-Match Sweep

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. - The Shippensburg University volleyball team continued its hot streak, winning both of its matches in a tri-match with Gettysburg College and Elizabethtown College. The Lady Raiders defeated the Bullets in five games before sweeping the host Blue Jays.

For Shippensburg (21-16), it was the team's ninth-straight victory as it won with scores of 30-21, 30-23, 30-21 against Elizabethtown before defeating Gettysburg 30-26, 27-30, 30-27, 24-30, 15-11.

Shippensburg kept rolling against the Blue Jays as Michele Doughty (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) paced the team with 12 kills and 15 digs. Sophomore Katie Laux (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler Area) led Shippensburg with six kills, three block solos and one block assist and junior Missy Pierce (Valparaiso, Ind./West Aurora (Ill.)) accounted for a team-high 18 kills.

Freshman Ashleigh Helfrick (Greencastle, Pa./James Buchanan) came through with 12 kills and a team-high 21 digs.

Helfrick led the way against the Bullets with 17 kills and 17 digs while Doughty added 10 kills and 32 digs. Pierce led the team with six service aces and freshman Maureen DuVall (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) posted a career-high 59 assists.

The Lady Raiders finish the regular-season with two Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division matches this week. West Chester University comes to Heiges Field House on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m., before Shippensburg travels to East Stroudsburg University next Saturday, November 5.

Currently, the Lady Raiders, Millersville, East Stroudsburg and Kutztown University are tied for first-place in the Eastern Division with identical 5-3 conference records. The top three teams in each division earn PSAC tournament bids.
