Balanced Effort Leads Ship Volleyball Past Bowie State

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - The Shippensburg University volleyball team extended its game winning streak to 15-straight in defeating Bowie State University, 30-18, 28-30, 30-18, 30-13, Thursday night at Heiges Field House.
The Lady Raiders (19-16) were led by freshman Maureen DuVall (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) who just missed her second triple-double of the season, totaling nine kills, 45 assists and 11 digs.
Shippensburg dominated early in the first and third games, running out to big leads en route to the victories. In game one, the Lady Raiders were led by freshman Ashleigh Helfrick (Greencastle, Pa./James Buchanan) who totaled all seven of her kills for the match in the opening game. Helfrick also had six service aces this evening.
In the third game, Shippensburg raced out to a commanding 20-5 lead before sealing the match with a 30-13 win.
Freshman Kelly Dirks (Enola, Pa./Cumberland Valley) had eight kills for the Lady Raiders while sophomores Katie Laux (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler Area) and Mandy Taylor (Hanover, Pa./Southwestern) each totaled seven. Freshman Kelsi Hoffman (York, Pa./West York) continued to add to her school record dig total, contributing 24 against the Lady Bulldogs.
In limited action, senior Michelle Doughty (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin), who was named Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division Player of the Week, totaled five kills and eight digs while junior Missy Pierce (Valparaiso, Ind./West Aurora (Ill.)) had three kills, five digs and two service aces.
Bowie State (10-14) led by as many as seven points in the second game, but Shippensburg managed to tie the game at 28-28 before the visitors edged out the 30-28 victory with back-to-back kills.
Shippensburg has won its last six matches and will conclude the regular-season with three of its final four matches on the road beginning this weekend when the team travels to Elizabethtown College for a tri-match with Gettysburg College.
