Williams Serves Volleyball To Sixth-Straight Win and First-Place
Oct. 25, 2005
SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Shippensburg University volleyball sophomore Brianna Williams (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll) totaled 10 service aces while the Lady Raiders totaled 33 as a team in a sweep of Cheyney University, 30-9, 30-6, 30-8, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division match Tuesday night at Heiges Field House.
The win extended Shippensburg's streak to six, its longest of the season, and is the most since the team won seven-straight over the final eight matches of last year. More importantly, the victory, coupled with Millersville University's loss to East Stroudsburg University, moved the Lady Raiders (18-16, 5-3 PSAC East) into a four-way tie for first-place in the conference standings with Millersville, East Stroudsburg and Kutztown University.
Over the team's last two matches, Williams has totaled 17 service aces after she had seven in the Shippensburg's 3-0 victory against Pfeiffer at home on Sunday. In the first meeting of the season with the Lady Wolves back on September 20, the Lady Raiders totaled 31 service aces.
Tonight's match took just 44 minutes for Shippensburg to pick up its fifth sweep in the last six matches as Cheyney (0-19, 0-8 PSAC East) is still looking for its first win of the year. Of the Lady Wolves' 23 points this evening, 19 came of Lady Raider errors, including 14 on service errors.
Freshman Maureen DuVall (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville), who led Shippensburg with eight service aces against Cheyney in the first meeting, had eight tonight while totaling two kills and 22 assists. Sophomore Katie Laux (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler Area) led the Lady Raiders with a team-high eight kills and added five service aces.
Williams contributed six kills and sophomore Mandy Taylor (Hanover, Pa./Southwestern) totaled five kills and six service aces. Freshman Leslie Serrano (LeMasters, Pa./James Buchanan) had two kills and a team-high four digs for Shippensburg while junior Trish Jorda (Westminster, Md./Francis Scott Key) had six kills, five service aces and two digs.
Offensively for Cheyney, Myra Adams and Paulette Branson each had one kill and Donielle Kelly and Lauren Henderson both had a service ace.
Shippensburg plays the final match of its current, seven-match homestand on Thursday when it hosts Bowie State University of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA). Start time from Heiges Field House is at 7:00 p.m.
