Doughty Reaches 1,000 Career Kills, Ship Sweeps NCCU, Barton

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Hosting the SU Regional Crossover this weekend, the Shippensburg University volleyball team captured victories over North Carolina Central University and Barton College on Saturday, extending its winning streak to four while evening its record to .500 on the season.

The Lady Raiders (16-16) needed only three games to dispose of defending Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) champion North Carolina Central in the day’s first match, 30-21, 30-24, 30-22.

Senior Michelle Doughty (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) paced the Lady Raiders with 11 kills and 18 digs against NCCU before totaling seven kills, 16 digs and two aces versus Barton. With her sixth kill against Barton, Doughty reached the 1,000 mark for her career as she now has 1,001 for her career. She already holds the school record for career digs with 1,582.

Freshman Maureen DuVall (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) contributed 39 assists, 14 digs and three service aces. Junior Missy Pierce (Valparaiso, Ind./West Aurora (Ill.)) provided 17 digs and eight kills and freshman Ashleigh Helfrick (Green Castle, Pa./James Buchanan) added three service aces, 11 kills and six digs.

In the final match, the Lady Raiders won in straight games over the Lady Bulldogs, 31-29, 30-26, 30-22.

Doughty continued her fine play with 16 digs, two aces and seven kills. Helfrick posted 19 digs, a team-high 11 kills, an ace and one block assist. DuVall added 36 assists and six kills while freshman Kelsi Hoffman (York, Pa./West York) led the team with 23 digs.

Shippensburg faces Pfeiffer University on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
