Lady Raider Volleyball Improves to 7-0 in PSAC East With Win Over ESU

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Led by 11 kills and 10 digs from sophomore Colleen Toomey (Reading/Muhlenberg), the Shippensburg University volleyball team won its 18th match out of the last 22 with a 30-18, 30-11, 30-23 victory over East Stroudsburg Tuesday night at Heiges Field House.
With the win, Lady Raiders (26-8, 7-0 PSAC East) remained unbeaten in conference play and surpassed the 1991 and 1992 teams for the second-best start in the PSAC Eastern Division as both teams started 6-0 before losing their first match. Only the 1990 team, which went undefeated in conference play at 10-0, has had a better start to its PSAC schedule.
Shippensburg also won its conference-leading 26th match of the year, adding to its current school record for wins in a season.
Toomey totaled her team-high seventh double-double of the season which is one more than red-shirt sophomore Brittany Roche (Morrisville/Pennsbury). Roche had nine kills, seven digs and three block assists against the Warriors.
Sophomore Kali Antolik (Johnstown/Westmont Hilltop) added eight kills and six blocks while sophomore Cindel Young (McConnellsburg/Broadfoarding Christian) also had eight kills.
The Lady Raiders used 12 players in tonight's match as sophomore Jacklyn Tuccio (Exton/Henderson) totaled three digs and sophomore Melanie Fries (Shady Grove/Greencastle Antrim) had two assists, one service ace and one dig. As a team, Shippensburg totaled 11 service aces and 15 blocks.
Junior Maureen DuVall (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) and sophomore Missy Ramp (York/Central York) combined for 35 of the team's 42 assists with DuVall totaling 21 and Ramp 14. DuVall also added two kills and two digs while Ramp contributed two kills and seven digs.
East Stroudsburg (8-21, 1-6 PSAC East), who hit just .020 as a team, was led by Kayla Mahaffay who totaled seven kills. Caitlin Kuhn, a 2006 All-PSAC Eastern Division First Team selection, had five kills in just six swings for an .833 hitting percentage, but played just one game. Lindsey Lullo led the way defensively with seven digs.
Following Shippensburg's win and Kutztown's 3-2 victory over West Chester, the Lady Raiders maintained its one-game lead over Kutztown for first place, but gained a game over third place West Chester and now lead the Golden Rams by three games.
Shippensburg returns to action on Friday when it travels to California (Pa.) for the second round of PSAC crossover matches. The Lady Raiders face the host Vulcans on Friday night at 7:15 p.m., before taking on Slippery Rock and Indiana (Pa.) on Saturday. California (Pa.) is currently in first place in the PSAC Western Division with a 7-0 record following tonight's 3-0 victory over IUP.
