Lady Raider Volleyball Sets New School For Wins in a Single-Season
Oct. 13, 2007
Elizabeth City State | Wheeling Jesuit
SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – For the second-straight season under fourth-year head coach Leanne Piscotty, the Shippensburg University volleyball team set a new school record for wins in a season as the Lady Raiders' 30-16, 30-15, 30-17 victory over Elizabeth City State on Saturday at Heiges Field House marked their 25th win of the year, moving them past the 1991 and 2006 teams who had won 24.
Following the victory though, Shippensburg (25-8) lost to Wheeling Jesuit for the second time in seven days, dropping a 24-30, 32-30, 30-20, 30-17 decision to the Cardinals (21-11) in the final match of the SU Regional Crossover.
In four seasons with the Lady Raiders, Piscotty has led the team to at least 21 wins in each season and her career record now stands at 91-53, for a .632 winning percentage. Not only is she just nine wins shy of 100, but she is also just 14 short of tying Robert Frazer (1980-85) for the most career wins in school history.
After a three-game sweep of Elizabeth City State (15-8), Shippensburg won the first game against Wheeling Jesuit before succumbing to the Cardinals in the three-straight, including a heartbreaking two-point loss in game two that would have put the Lady Raiders up 2-0.
Red-shirt sophomore Brittany Roche (Morrisville/Pennsbury) totaled a team-high 13 kills in the loss after posting nine in a loss at WJU on October 6. She also led the team with four service aces and had 19 digs which were on short of her career-high of 20 set at Millersville on September 11. It also marked her sixth double-double of the season.
Meanwhile, junior Maureen DuVall (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) finished just one dig short of her second career triple-double as she totaled 10 digs, 25 assists and nine digs. Her previous triple-double came earlier this season on September 11 when she had a career-high 17 kills, 47 assists and 14 digs.
Defensively, junior Kelsi Hoffman (York/West York) and sophomore Colleen Toomey (Reading/Muhlenberg) each totaled 18 digs while sophomore Missy Ramp (York/Central York) added 11.
Meanwhile, sophomore Cindel Young (McConnellsburg/Broadfoarding Christian) had nine kills and six blocks and sophomore Kali Antolik (Johnstown/Westmont Hilltop) totaled eight kills.
Shippensburg returns to PSAC Eastern Division play on Tuesday when it hosts East Stroudsburg at Heiges Field House beginning at 7:00 p.m. The Lady Raiders are currently in first place in the East with a 6-0 record, one game ahead of Kutztown (5-1) and two ahead of West Chester (4-2). The Eastern Division champion will host the PSAC Volleyball Championship November 9-10.
