Oct. 12, 2007

Box Score

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Led by a season-high nine kills from junior Karey Toms (Waynesboro/Waynesboro), it took just one hour and eight minutes for the Shippensburg University volleyball team to pick up its 24th win of the year, tying the school record for the second-straight season, as the Lady Raiders swept the District of Columbia 30-12, 30-16 and 30-19 Friday night at Heiges Field House in the SU Regional Crossover.

The win was the sixth in the last seven matches for Shippensburg (24-7) who tied the 1991 and 2006 teams for the most wins in a single-season. With nine matches remaining in the regular-season, the Lady Raiders could reach the 30-win plateau before potentially hosting the PSAC Volleyball Championship which will be held at the champion of the Eastern Division.

Shippensburg is currently in first place in the East with a perfect 6-0 record with four matches left. The last team to go undefeated and win the Eastern Division was Millersville back in 1998 (10-0).

Toms' nine kills were one more than the eight she had in a 3-2 loss at Elizabethtown back on September 4. Sophomores Colleen Toomey (Reading/Muhlenberg) and Brittany Roche (Morrisville/Pennsbury) each totaled eight kills for the Lady Raiders who also received 29 assists from sophomore Missy Ramp (York/Central York) which were three short of her season-high of 32 set against Elizabethtown.

Toomey also added a team-high six digs, four service aces and two block solos while junior Kelsi Hoffman (York/West York) added five digs. Junior Maureen DuVall (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) had 10 assists.

The Lady Raiders will host day two of SU Regional Crossover on Saturday with action getting underway at 10 AM when West Chester plays Wheeling Jesuit and Edinboro plays Elizabeth City State. Shippensburg will play at Noon and 2 PM against Elizabeth City State and Wheeling Jesuit.
