Volleyball Pushes Streak to Nine with Two Wins at WJU Tournament

WHEELING, W. Va. - The Shippensburg Lady Raider volleyball team continued to roll Saturday, sweeping Mount Olive and W.Va. Wesleyan at the WJU Tournament in Wheeling, W.Va., to extend its winning streak to nine matches. It is the second time this season that the Lady Raiders have won nine matches in a row.
Aside from the nine-match winning streak from Aug. 28 to Sept. 8, the feat was last accomplished in 1991, when the team led by coach Mike Shatzer won 11-straight matches. It also happened in the program's innagural season after the team posted an 11-0 record.
With the 3-0 weekend at the WJU Tournament, the Lady Raiders improved their season record to 18-9.
On Saturday, the Lady Raiders wasted no time dispatching Mount Olive, winning by scores of 30-12, 30-16 and 30-24. Senior Missy Pierce (Valparaiso, Ind./West Aurora (Ill.)) recorded a team-high 17 kills. Freshman Kali Antolik (Johnstown/Westmont Hilltop) tallied eight kills while committing just one error on 16 attempts. Fellow freshman Cindel Young (McConnelsburg/Broadfording Christian Academy) also recorded eight kills.
In the tourney finale, the Lady Raiders breezed by W.Va.
Wesleyan, 30-23, 30-14, 30-23. Pierce totaled 11 kills, 12 digs and three service
aces. Antolik turned in another impressive showing, posting 10 kills on
13 swings without committing an error. Freshman Missy Ramp (York/Central
York) led the team with 22 assists.
Through three matches at the WJU Tournament, Antolik posted 30 kills and
a .551 hitting percentage.
The Lady Raiders will look to extend their streak on Tues., Oct. 10 in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division match-up at West Chester. Match time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
