Volleyball Snaps 12-Match Losing Streak to Clarion, Extends Win Streak to 10
Sept. 28, 2007
WEST CHESTER, Pa. - Led by 16 kills and eight blocks from
sophomore Kali Antolik (Johnstown/Westmont Hilltop), the Shippensburg
University women's volleyball team won its 10th-straight match Friday
night while ending a 12-match losing streak against Clarion, winning
19-30, 30-16, 24-30, 33-31 and 15-12 in a PSAC crossover at West
Chester.
It marked the first victory for the Lady Raiders (18-4) against the Golden Eagles
since Oct. 19, 1991 and was just the fifth victory for Shippensburg versus
the PSAC Western Division since 2002. All five victories have come under fourth-year head coach Leanne Piscotty.
For Clarion (15-2), the loss was just the second of the season and the first since
a 3-2 loss at home versus California (Pa.) on September 18. The Golden Eagles
entered the match in second place in the PSAC Western Division with a 3-1
record while the Lady Raiders were in first place in the Eastern Division at 4-0.
Antolik was second on the team in kills behind red-shirt sophomore Brittany
Roche (Morrisville/Pennsbury) who had 19, two short of her career-high set against
Limestone on September 1. Antolik's most instrumental contribution came at the net where she totaled seven block assists and one block solo.
Defense proved to be the key for Shippensburg as sophomore Hannah
Sorber (Noxen/Lake-Lehman) had five block assists in addition
to her 13 digs. Junior Kelsi
Hoffman (York/West York) was also key in the Lady Raiders' defensive
effort as she totaled 18 digs, two short of her season-high set against Anderson (S.C.) on August 31.
Junior Maureen DuVall (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) had another strong all-around
performance with seven kills, 50 assists, 14 digs and three blocks, just
missing her second triple-double of the season. Against Millersville on September 11, she had 17 kills, 47 assists and 14 digs.
With her 50 assists, DuVall now has 2,580 for her career and is 210 behind Heather
Wilton (1989-92) for second on the school's all-time list. She is already
ranked fourth in career service aces with 155, 11 behind current assistant coach Missy Pierce.
In addition to her team-high 19 kills, Roche also added 10 digs to record her
fourth double-double of the season while sophomore Colleen Toomey
(Reading/Muhlenberg) added 12 kills, four digs and three blocks.
Shippensburg continues its crossover competition at West Chester on Saturday when
it plays Edinboro at 11:00 a.m., before taking on Lock Haven at 1:00 p.m.
Two of the Lady Raiders' five wins against the PSAC Western Division under
Piscotty have come against Edinboro. Meanwhile, Shippensburg upset Lock
Haven in a PSAC crossover at home last season which
ended a 10-match losing streak for the Lady Raiders against the Lady Eagles
and was their first win since Oct. 22, 1993.
