Ship Volleyball Wins One, Loses One on Day Two of Crossover

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. - The Shippensburg University volleyball team split a pair of matches at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover at East Stroudsburg University on Saturday against Western Division members Clarion University and Edinboro University.
After falling in three games in game one to No. 24 Lock Haven University on Friday night, the Lady Raiders (10-6) returned to action Saturday morning against Clarion, but were downed in three-straight games, 30-24, 30-25, 30-24.
Freshman Maureen DuVall (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) continued her fine rookie season with four kills, 11 digs and a team-high 27 assists. Fellow freshman Ashleigh Helfrick (Greencastle, Pa./James Buchanan) turned in seven kills and eight digs, while senior Michelle Doughty (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) added six kills and 14 digs.
Despite the loss, Shippensburg rebounded with a 3-1 victory over Edinboro in the day’s second match. The Lady Raiders took the first two games 30-23, 30-25 before the Fighting Scots battled back with a 24-30 victory in the third game. However, the Lady Raiders closed out the match and their 10th win of the season with a 30-24 triumph in the fourth game.
Doughty led the team in digs with 31 while also totaling 11 kills. DuVall posted nine kills, a team-high 39 assists and 10 digs. Junior Missy Pierce (Valparaiso, Ind./West Aurora) recorded 22 digs and 11 kills and freshman Kelsi Hoffman (York, Pa./West York) contributed 20 digs and four aces.
The Lady Raiders return to PSAC Eastern Division play on Tuesday when they travel West Chester University. Start time is 7:30 p.m.
