Lady Raiders Come Up Empty at PSAC Crossover

INDIANA, Pa. - The Lady Raider volleyball team opened the season with a 9-1 record and nine-straight victories, but after two losses on Saturday at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover at Indiana, Pa., the Lady Raiders fall to 9-9 on the season and are in the midst of the longest losing streak since 2002.
Shippensburg's defeats came at the hands of Indiana (Pa.) and California (Pa.). Indiana improved to 5-5 on the season while California moved to 12-3 overall.
In the opening match against IUP, Shippensburg stayed close, but could not muster enough offense. IUP won the first game 30-27 and then closed the match with two-straight wins by a 30-24 score.
Senior Missy Pierce (Valparaiso, Ind./West Aurora (Ill.)) led Shippensburg with 15 digs and 10 kills. Sophomore Brooke Neider (Reading/Exeter) recorded 12 digs. Sophomore Maureen DuVall (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) chipped in with 11 digs and four services aces.
Against Cal, Shippensburg managed to stay close in the opening game once again, falling 30-26. However, California rolled through the second and third games by scores of 30-18 and 30-21.
Freshman Colleen Toomey (Reading/Muhlenberg) posted 11 kills and just one error on 24 swings. Fellow freshman Cindel Young (McConnellsburg/Broadfording Christian Academy) recorded 13 kills and just three errors on 26 attempts.
Shippensburg returns to PSAC Eastern Division action at Cheyney on Tues., Sept. 26. Match time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
