Lady Raider Volleyball Hands West Chester Second-Straight Loss, 3-1

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore Colleen
Toomey (Reading/Muhlenberg) totaled 19 kills and six digs as the Shippensburg
University women's volleyball team won its fourth-straight match Tuesday
evening while handing West Chester just its second loss in 17 matches this
season, 20-30, 30-25, 30-16 and 30-26 inside Heiges Field House.
With their win and Kutztown's 3-1 win over Millersville at home, the Lady
Raiders (12-4, 3-0 PSAC East) and Golden Bears remain tied for first place
in the PSAC Eastern Division standings, both with identical 3-0 records.
The two teams are scheduled to meet next Tuesday at Shippensburg.
As for Tuesday's win, it marked the first time that the Lady Raiders have
started 3-0 in divisional play since 2000. It was also just the second victory
in the last nine matches for Shippensburg against the Golden Rams (15-2,
1-2 PSAC East) and ended a four-match losing streak for the Lady Raiders.
The last victory for Shippensburg in the series came in head coach Leanne
Piscotty's first season, 3-2 at West Chester on Oct. 19, 2004.
In addition, the win was the first at home for Shippensburg in the series
since Sept. 26, 2000, a string a seven matches.
After West Chester took the first game, the Lady Raiders battled back in
the second to tie the match at 1-1 before posting a decisive 14-point victory
in game three behind the service of red-shirt sophomore Brittany
Roche (Morrisville/Pennsbury).
With the score tied at 11-11, Shippensburg scored 12 consecutive points to
take a commanding 23-11 lead.
Toomey and sophomore Kali Antolik (Johnstown/Westmont Hilltop) had five and
four kills, respectively, in the third game to lead the Lady Raiders as they
totaled 19 as a team and posted a .444 hitting percentage. Meanwhile, the
Golden Rams totaled eight kills, but also had eight errors in 39 attempts.
Toomey would add eight kills in the fourth game while junior Karey
Toms (Waynesboro/Waynesboro) added all five of her kills in the deciding game.
Junior Maureen DuVall (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville), who was named PSAC
Eastern Division Player of the Week on Tuesday, continued her strong performance
with six kills and a season-high 51 assists. She also added four block assists.
Antolik finished the match with 12 kills, four block assists and three service
aces while Roche totaled six kills, 10 digs and a team-high four service
aces. Sophomore Cindel Young (McConnellsburg/Broadfoarding Christian) and
junior Kelsi Hoffman (York/West York) played strong defensively for Shippensburg,
totaling five blocks and 18 digs, respectively.
The Lady Raiders return to action on Friday at the East Stroudsburg Tournament
against Bryant at 4:00 PM before taking on Caldwell at 6:00 PM.
