Lady Raiders Drop Fourth Straight While Kutztown Stays Unbeaten
Sept. 16, 2006
KUTZTOWN, Pa. - The Shippensburg Lady Raider
volleyball team opened the 2006 season with nine wins in its first 10 matches,
but on Saturday, the unbeaten Kutztown Golden Bears dealt the Lady Raiders
their fourth-straight loss, dropping Ship's record to 9-5 overall
and 0-2 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division.
Kutztown (11-0, 2-0 PSAC East) opened the match with a 30-21 win, but Shippensburg
bounced back with a 30-18 win in the second game. From there, however, Kutztown
took advantage of Shippensburg miscues and rattled off wins by the scores
of 30-18 and 30-22 in the final two games.
It is the first time since 2003 that Shippensburg have opened PSAC East play
with consecutive losses. The victory for Kutztown gave Head Coach John Gump
his 400th career victory.
The Lady Raiders were led by freshmen Miranda Wenger (Chambersburg/Chambersburg) and Colleen
Toomey (Reading/Muhlenberg) who tallied 10 kills apiece. Toomey
also posted 16 digs. Senior Erin Graf (Laurel, Md./Atholton) recorded a team-high
.190 hitting percentage and seven kills.
Sophomore Kelsi Hoffman (York/West York) chipped in a team-high 20 digs,
and sophomore Maureen DuVall (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) handed out 31
assists.
The Lady Raiders look to bounce back on Wed., Sept. 27 at Heiges Field House
when they take on Mansfield in a PSAC Eastern Division contest. Match time
