Pierce Records 1,000th Career Kill as Lady Raiders Fall to West Chester
Sept. 12 , 2006
SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Shippensburg University senior Missy Pierce (Valparaiso, Ind./West Aurora (Ill.)) made history by recording her 1,000th career kill, but West Chester spoiled the evening, ousting the Lady Raiders in three games and sending them to their third-straight defeat.
Pierce, who tallied her 1,500th career dig just five days earlier, entered the evening needing three kills to become just the third player in Shippensburg history to notch 1,000 kills and digs. With evening's first game tied at 19, Pierce delivered the milestone kill off an assist from freshman Missy Ramp (York/Central York), giving Shippensburg a 20-19 advantage.
However, West Chester (8-2, 1-0) rallied to take the first game 30-27 and then held off Shippensburg (9-4, 0-1) by scores of 30-23 and 30-24 to sweep the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division opener.
West Chesters win, though, did not come without a fight from the Lady Raiders. Ship trailed 29-23 late in the first game but senior Erin Graf (Laurel, Md./Atholton) entered the game and recorded three consecutive kills. Pierce added another to cut the lead to 29-27, but West Chester managed to end Ship's charge on the next serve.
In the second game, West Chester bolted out to a 23-13 advantage, but Ship roared back, cutting the lead to 25-22 before the Golden Rams closed the game with a run of their own.
Pierce led Shippensburg with 11 kills and 15 digs. Freshman Colleen Toomey (Reading/Muhlenberg) recorded 11 kills, and Graf finished with nine kills and a block assist. Sophomore Kelsi Hoffman (York/West York) posted 14 digs. Ramp and sophomore Maureen DuVall (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) each recorded 17 assists.
The Lady Raiders will look to bounce back on Sat., Sept. 16 when they travel to Kutztown University for a PSAC Eastern Division match. Match time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
