Volleyball Opens PSAC Eastern Division Play With 3-2 Win Over Millersville
Sept. 11, 2007
MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – Led by a triple-double
from junior Maureen DuVall (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville), the Shippensburg
University women's volleyball team won its third match
in the last five days at Millersville's Pucillo Gymnasium as the Lady Raiders
opened PSAC Eastern Division play with a 30-22, 30-32, 24-30, 30-18, 15-13
victory over the Marauders Tuesday night.
Prior to Tuesday's victory, Shippensburg (10-4, 1-0 PSAC East) went 2-2 at
the Dutch Country Spiketacular last Friday and Saturday with wins over Wilmington
(Delaware) and Salem International.
After falling behind in the match 2-1, Shippensburg was able to pull out
the victory thanks to poor offensive attacking by Millersville (8-6, 0-1
PSAC East) as the Marauders totaled just 14 kills compared to 12 errors in
the final two games for a .024 hitting percentage which included a -.030
in the decisive fifth game.
In addition to a career-high 17 kills, DuVall also added 47 assists and a
career-high 14 digs to mark the first triple-double of her career. Her previous
career high in kills was 10, set twice as a freshman in 2005 against Pittsburgh-Johnstown
and Adelphi. Earlier this season on August 31, DuVall totaled a then career-high
13 digs in a 3-1 victory over Anderson (S.C.) at the Raider Classic.
DuVall's 47 assists were her second-highest total of the season behind the
49 she had against Anderson. Her career high in assists is 59, set twice
in a 3-2 win at Gettysburg on Oct. 29, 2005 and in a 3-2 win over Millersville
in
the
two teams' last meeting, a 3-2 Shippensburg victory on Oct. 28, 2006.
DuVall also added two service aces to raise her career total to 151, leaving
her two behind Deb Smith (1991-94) and Michelle Doughty (2002-05) for fifth
on the school's all-time list.
Junior Brittany Roche (Morrinsville/Pennsbury) also
had a team-high 17 kills Tuesday night as she and DuVall were two of four Lady
Raiders who totaled
at least 10 kills, joining sophomore Colleen Toomey (Reading/Muhlenberg) who
had 16 and sophomore Kali Antolik (Johnstown/Westmont Hilltop) who
added 10.
Toomey's 16 kills were a season-high and marked the ninth time this season
that she has reached double figures in kills, the most of anyone on the
team ahead of Roche and Antolik, who have each totaled 10 or more kills seven
times.
Junior libero Kelsi Hoffman (York/West York) led the team defensively with
a season-high 21 digs and was one of five Lady Raiders with at least 12 digs.
Roche and Toomey were credited with 20 and 19 digs, respectively, setting
a new career-high for each.
Shippensburg will look to continue its conference momentum on Saturday when
the team travels to East Stroudsburg for a match at 12 PM inside Koehler
Fieldhouse.
