Lady Raider Winning Streak Halted with Two Losses at Dutch Country Spiketacular
Sept. 9, 2006
MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - The Shippensburg volleyball team entered Saturday’s matches at the Dutch Country Spiketacular riding a nine-match winning streak and stood two shy of matching the school record for consecutive victories. However, Dowling and Adelphi put an end to the streak by handing the Lady Raiders a pair of tough defeats.
In Shippensburg’s opening match, Dowling rolled 30-21, 30-22, 30-22. Leading the Lady Raiders were senior Missy Pierce (Valparaiso, Ind./West Aurora (Ill.)) and freshman Colleen Toomey (Reading/Muhlenberg). Pierce tallied seven kills and 14 digs while Toomey added nine kills.
Sophomore Kelsi Hoffman (York/West York) and freshman Missy Ramp (York/Central York) recorded 10 digs apiece and Ramp added 25 assists.
Shippensburg looked to bounce back against Adelphi and took the first two games 32-30 and 30-6. However, Adelphi swept the final three games 30-25, 30-26, 15-12.
Toomey notched a career-high 20 kills for the Lady Raiders while Pierce notched 13 kills and a team-best 18 digs. Ramp handed out 50 assists in the defeat.
On Friday, Pierce had recorded the 1,500th dig of her career and entering Saturday, needed just 23 kills to become the third player in school history to total 1,000 digs and 1,000 kills in their career. She recorded 20 kills on Saturday, leaving her three shy of the historical milestone.
The Lady Raiders return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 12 against West Chester in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division opener at Heiges Field House. Match time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
