Shippensburg's Pierce Named PSAC East Player of the Week

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) released its first player of the week awards of the 2006 volleyball season on Tuesday, and Shippensburg University senior Missy Pierce (Valparaiso, Ind./West Aurora (Ill.) was named PSAC Eastern Division Player of the Week.

The outside hitter has led the Lady Raiders to a 6-1 start; it's best since 1992. In seven matches and 19 games this season, Pierce has totaled a team-best 85 kill. She also compiled a .317 hitting percentage while recording 48 digs and six service aces.

In the season opener against Mercyhurst, Pierce turned in 18 kills and 11 digs. The next day, she tallied 12 kills and 14 digs against LeMoyne. On Sept. 1 against Barton, she recorded a match-high 24 kills and committed just three errors on 37 swings for a hitting percentage of .568. She also recorded three digs and a service ace.

Heading into Tuesday evening's match against Elizabethtown College, Pierce has 948 career kills and 1,481 digs which ranks second in school history.

Pierce leads the Lady Raiders into the Dutch Country Spiketacular on Sept. 8-9. Ship is scheduled to play four matches on the weekend, starting at 2 p.m. against Salem International.
