Lady Raiders Push Winning Streak to Seven with Victory Over Elizabethtown
Sept. 5, 2006
SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Led by the sparkling
play of senior Missy Pierce (Valparaiso, Ind./West Aurora (Ill.)) and freshmen
middle blockers Cindel
Young (McConellsburg/Broadfording Christian Academy) and Kali
Antolik (Johnstown/Westmont Hilltop), the Shippensburg Lady Raider volleyball team pushed its winning
streak to seven matches and handed Elizabethtown its first loss of the season
Tuesday evening at Heiges Field House.
Shippensburg (7-1) took the match in four games, 30-28, 17-30, 30-13, 30-17.
The Lady Raiders opened the match by outlasting the Blue Jays (2-1) 30-28
in a back-and-forth first game. In the second game, though, Elizabethtown
seemingly
took control of the match by capitalizing on several Shippensburg miscues.
However, Shippensburg rebounded thanks in large part to Young and Antolik’s
presence at the net and with Pierce dialed in, the Lady Raiders ran away
with 30-13 and 30-17 wins in the third and fourth games.
Pierce, who was named Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern
Division Player of the Week earlier in the day, led the Lady Raider charge
with a team-best 14 kills and 15 digs. She also contributed three block solos
and a block assist.
Antolik recorded a career-high four block solos and three block assists while
chipping in six kills. Young tacked on four kills and a block solo.
Fellow freshman Colleen Toomey (Reading/Muhlenberg) was equally impressive
with 11 kills and a team-high four service aces. Classmate Missy
Ramp (York/Central York) tallied 39 assists.
Shippensburg travels to Millersville on Sept. 8-9 for four matches in the
Dutch Country Spiketacular. The squad’s first match is against Salem
International Friday at 2 p.m.
