Shippensburg Concludes Bearcat Challenge With Two Victories

LATROBE, Pa. - After dropping both of its matches on Friday night, the Shippensburg University women's volleyball team responded with back-to-back victories at the Bearcat Challenge hosted by Saint Vincent College with wins against Glenville State College, 3-0 (30-20, 30-16, 30-4) and the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown, 3-0 (30-17, 30-13, 30-25).

Against Glenville State (0-8), Shippensburg was led by senior Michelle Doughty (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) who totaled a team-high 10 kills while totaling a .400 hitting percentage. She also added six digs.

Freshman Maureen DuVall (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) had another stellar performance for the second consecutive day with six kills, nine digs, 28 assists and eight service aces. She had a hitting percentage of .417 versus the Pioneers and in four matches this weekend, totaled 30 kills, 50 digs and 125 assists.

Freshmen Kelsi Hoffman (York, Pa./West York) and Ashleigh Helfrick (Greencastle, Pa./James Buchanan) both had strong defensive performances for the Lady Raiders with 18 and 16 digs, respectively. Freshman Mandy Taylor (Hanover, Pa./Southwestern) also contributed six kills and six digs.
 
In the second match versus Pittsburgh-Johnstown (1-3), DuVall became a member of the triple-double club sponsored by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) by totaling 10 kills, 12 digs and 31 assists. In the three-game sweep, she had an impressive .666 hitting percentage.

Helfrick had seven kills, 19 digs and five service aces while Taylor and freshman Kelly Dirks (Enola, Pa./Cumberland Valley) each totaled seven kills. Taylor also had five digs and three service aces.

Shippensburg (5-3) will have the coming week off before returing to action next Friday, September 9 in the MU/Dutch Country Spiketacular Classic hosted by Millersville University. The Lady Raiders will face Glenville State for the second time at 2:00 p.m., before meeting the University of New Haven at 6:00 p.m.
