Lady Raiders Win Both Matches on Last Day of Raider Classic

LATROBE, Pa. - The Shippensburg
University women's volleyball team lost both of its matches on Friday night
at the SVC Bearcat Challenge hosted by Saint Vincent College in Latrobe,
Pa. The Lady Raiders lost to Allegheny College, 3-1 (30-23, 31-29, 28-30,
30-23) before falling to host Saint Vincent, 3-0 (30-25, 30-21, 30-22).
Against Allegheny (2-0), Shippensburg was led by senior Michelle
Doughty (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) who totaled a team-high 16 kills along
with 18 digs. Freshman Maureen DuVall (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) had
a career-night in her fifth collegiate match with nine kills, 19 digs and
44 assists, one kill shy of qualifying for the American Volleyball Coaches
Association (AVCA) triple-double club.
Freshmen Kelsi Hoffman (York, Pa./West York) and Ashleigh
Helfrick (Greencastle, Pa./James Buchanan) both had strong defensive performances for the Lady Raiders
with 30 and 25 digs, respectively. Helfrick also added 13 kills.
In the second match versus Saint Vincent (2-0), freshman Kelly Dirks
(Enola, Pa./Cumberland Valley) led the offense with six kills while totaling
a .250 hitting
percentage. DuVall had three kills, 10 digs, 22 assists and five service
aces with Hoffman contributing 22 digs.
Shippensburg (3-3), who is still without its leading returning player
from last season in junior Missy Pierce (Valparaiso, Ind./West Aurora
(IL)), returns
to action on Saturday afternoon in the Bearcat Challenge, facing Glenville
State at 10:00 a.m., and the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown at 11:30
a.m.
