Lady Raiders Split Two Matches on Day One of Raider Classic

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - The Shippensburg University volleyball team opened its season at home on Saturday afternoon, hosting the 13-team Raider Classic in Heiges Field House. The Lady Raiders defeated Davis & Elkins College in the team's first match, but fell to Mercyhurst College later in the evening.
Against Davis & Elkins, Shippensburg (1-1) won in three-straight games, 30-22, 30-20, 30-22. Freshman Kelsi Hoffman (York, Pa./West York) was solid in her collegiate debut as she posted 13 digs. Freshman Kelly Dirks (Enola, Pa./Cumberland Valley), sophomore Mandy Taylor (Hanover, Pa./Southwestern) and senior Michelle Doughty (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) each had six kills.
In the Lady Raiders' final match of the day, the team fell to the Lakers in four games, 28-30, 30-22, 30-27, 30-28. Hoffman recorded 31 digs in the match while Doughty recorded 11 kills and 16 digs. Freshman Maureen DuVall (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) led the team with 25 assists and five aces.
The Raider Classic continues on Sunday, beginning at 10:00 a.m., in Heiges Field House. Shippensburg will take the court at 12:30 p.m., against Ohio Valley University before meeting West Virginia Wesleyan College at 5:30 p.m.
