Lady Raiders Open Season With Split at Ram Rumble Tournament

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W. Va. - The Shippensburg volleyball team opened the 2006 season on Friday with a split at the Ram Rumble Tournament hosted by Shepherd. The Lady Raiders lost in four games to Mercyhurst by scores of 30-24, 28-30, 28-30 and 27-30 before rebounding to sweep Wilmington (Delaware) 30-15, 30-23 and 30-17.
In the opener, Shippensburg was led by senior Missy Pierce (Valparaiso, Ind./West Aurora (IL)), who posted a team-high 18 kills to go along with 11 digs. Sophomore libero Kelsi Hoffman (York/West York) led the team with 24 digs to go along with three service aces while senior Erin Graf (Laurel, Md./Atholton) finished with 15 kills and a team-high .433 hitting percentage.
Freshman Missy Ramp led the team with 47 assists and sophomore Brooke Neider (Reading/Exeter) had 13 digs and one kill. Freshman Cindel Young (McConnellsburg/Broadfording Christian Academy) led the defensive effort by contributing six block solos and two block assists.
In the sweep of Wilmington (Delaware), freshman Colleen Toomey (Reading/Muhlenberg) led the team with 12 kills and added a service ace. Junior Mandy Taylor (Hanover, Pa./South Western) totaled seven kills and added one dig while Graf and Young each added seven kills.
Hoffman led the team with 11 digs while Ramp led the Lady Raiders with 28 of the team's 40 assists and also recorded a block solo.
The Lady Raiders will continue play at the Ram Rumble Tournament on Saturday with contests against Shepherd at 11:00 a.m. and LeMoyne at 3:00 p.m.
