LEWISBURG, Pa. - On Saturday afternoon at the Bison Opener on the campus of Bucknell University, sophomore Mary Dell (Boiling Springs/Boiling Springs) was competing in the 1,000-meter run for the first time in her collegiate career. Dell shattered the school record by almost three seconds to highlight the first meet of the season for the Lady Raiders.

Dell finished in second place with a time of 3:01.60, breaking the previous mark of 3:04.24 set in 2000 by Tammy Cauler. Dell began her career a season ago primarily as a sprinter, competing in the 200- and 400-meter dashes, before making the transition to the 800-meter run prior to the PSAC Championships.

In the final event of the day, the 1,600-meter relay team came within three-hundredths of a second of tying the school record in that event. Dell and sophomore Shannon Hare (Middletown/Middletown) teamed up with talented freshmen Laura Henzy (Langhorne/Neshaminy) and Erica Hess (Selinsgrove/Selinsgrove) to earn seventh place with a finish of 4:00.64.

It was the first time that the quartet had collectively run the event, while the group that set the record in 2003 was composed of junior and senior runners.

Henzy and Hare also excelled in the 200-meter dash. Henzy earned fifth place with a time of 26.72 seconds, while Hare finished ninth with a time of 26.99 seconds.

Other strong finishers for Shippensburg on Saturday were sophomore Casey Drummond (Maple Glen/Upper Dublin), who tied for seventh place in the high jump with a leap of 1.55 meters, and junior Michelle Morcom (Moscow/Western Wayne), who earned eighth place in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 9.37 seconds.

Shippensburg will be in action next weekend at the Ursinus Open, which begins at 9:00 a.m.
