Shippensburg Alum Kelly Stewart Qualifies For 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Shippensburg University women's cross country and track and field alumnus Kelly Stewart ’04, a three-time All American and standout distance runner for the Lady Raiders, recently qualified for the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials after winning the Nationwide Better Health Columbus Marathon on Sunday, October 21.

Stewart won the event back with a time of 2:43:28 which qualified her to compete in the U.S. Olympic Trials which will be held in Boston, Massachusetts on April 20, 2008.

Competing in just her third marathon, Stewart advanced her way through the field and took the lead at the 23-mile mark. She opened her lead to as many as 70 seconds before crossing the finish line.

Despite temperatures nearing 80 degrees by the end of the race, Stewart posted splits of 1:21:30 and 1:21:58.

In four years at Shippensburg, Stewart finished fourth at the PSAC Cross Country Championships in both 2001 and 2003, earning All-American honors as senior in 2003.

Stewart was equally distinguished in track and field, concluding her career as a two-time PSAC champion in the 10,000-meter run in both 2002 and 2003. She earned All-America honors in 2002 with an eighth-place finish at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships and duplicated the honor in her senior season with a fourth-place finish in 2004.

Stewart also won the 3,000-meter event at the 2004 PSAC outdoor championships with a time of 10:00.34. Also that year, she won the 5,000-meter run at the 2004 indoor championships with a time of 17:24.51.

Stewart, a native of Glenmoore, currently resides in Rochester Hills, Michigan.
