Lady Raider Track Earns Share of First PSAC Indoor Championship, Dell MVP

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. - The Shippensburg University women’s indoor track and field team tied for first at the 2008 PSAC Indoor Track and Field Championships with Slippery Rock, while sophomore Mary Dell (Boiling Springs/Boiling Springs) tied with West Chester’s Danielle Scardino for the championship MVP honors at this year’s event hosted inside East Stroudsburg's Koehler Fieldhouse.

It is the first indoor conference championship in school history for the Lady Raiders who totaled 110 points over the two days of competition and saw Dell contribute to three NCAA provisional qualifying times.

Freshman Erica Hess (Selinsgrove/Selinsgrove) won the 400-meter dash with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 57.45 seconds by outlasting Slippery Rock’s Lacey Cochran by four-hundredths of a second while freshman Laura Henzy (Langhorne/Neshaminy) took fifth and sophomore Shannon Hare (Middletown/Middletown) placed seventh.

Junior Siobhan Richards (York Haven/York Haven) earned two top-five finishes for the Lady Raiders, taking second place in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.33 seconds and finishing fifth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.34 seconds.

In addition to her contributions to the 4x800-meter relay team that took first place with a provisional qualifying time on Saturday, Dell finished third in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:14.63 that was just 0.57 seconds off the pace of lead-runner Holly Urban of California (Pa.). Her effort was one of three that broke the previous championship meet record and earned Dell a provisional qualifying time.

Freshman Abby Huber (Mechanicsburg/Cumberland Valley) finished fifth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:18.95. Freshmen Jamie McCollum (Duncannon/Susquenita) and Emily Dubs (Dover/Northeastern) also placed for Shippensburg.

Dell capped off her afternoon by finishing second in the 1-mile run with another NCAA provisional time of 5:06.09 while Huber finished sixth place in 5:10.67.

Freshman Katie Frey (Frederick, Md./Thomas Johnson) finished her first indoor season by taking third in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:26.70 and freshman Rebekah Newhart (Muncy/Hughesville) finished second in the triple jump with a leap of 37' 3."

In the 55-meter hurdles, junior Michelle Morcom (Moscow/Western Wayne) finished third with a time of 8.51 seconds and fellow junior Katrina Grussenmyer (Holland/Council Rock South) finished seventh in 8.77 seconds.

The 2008 NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships will be held over two days beginning Friday, March 14 at the University of Minnesota-Mankato. Both days of competition will be broadcast via broadband by the NCAA with the action available live at www.cstv.com.
