Feb. 26, 2006
EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. - Junior
Monica Speca (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Trinity) took home second-place
in the high jump to lead the Shippensburg University women's track and
field team
to fifth-place at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Indoor
Championships hosted at East Stroudsburg University on
Sunday.
Speca's second-place finish was one of two runner-up finishes for the Lady
Raiders who finished the two-day event with a total of 67.50 points. Kutztown
University won its third-straight championship with a total of 111 points,
followed by Slippery Rock University (92), Indiana University (Pa.) (89),
Lock Haven University (77) and Shippensburg.
With a jump of 5-feet, 5-inches, Speca actually finished in a four-way
tie for first-place, provisionally qualifying her for the NCAA championships.
Her mark was one-inch higher than her previous season-best set on February
5 at the DeSchriver Invitational, also held at East Stroudsburg.
On Saturday, the women's 4x800-meter relay team also placed second in 9:39.85.
In addition to two runner-up finishes, Shippensburg had a total of 10 top-5
finishes and 15 placewinners.
Other notable performances on Sunday included a trio of fourth-place finishes
led by freshman Kristen McGoldrick (Boothwyn, Pa./Garnet Valley) in the
800-meter run, senior Anna Mack (Olyphant, Pa./Lakeland) in the 55-meter
hurdles and freshman Ashleigh Helfrick (Greencastle, Pa./James
Buchanan) in the pentathlon.
Senior Sonia Spriggs (Avondale, Pa./Avondale), who finished seventh in
the weight throw on Saturday, took home sixth-place in the shot put on
Sunday.
Shippensburg will now return home to prepare for the NCAA Division II Indoor
Track and Field Championships on March 10-11 at the Reggie Lewis Track
and Athletic Center in Boston, Massachussetts.
