Lady Raiders Earn Fifth-Place Finish at PSAC Indoor Championships
Feb. 25, 2007
EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. - The
Shippensburg University women's track and field team finished in fifth
place with a total of 69 points at the 2007 PSAC Indoor Championships,
finishing 95.5 points behind first-place Slippery Rock University, who
ended Kutztown's run of three consecutive women's indoor championships.
This year's finish for Shippensburg was 1.5 points better than last year's
performance in which the Lady Raiders also took home fifth place.
In Sunday action, Shippensburg recorded one second-place finish to go along
with several additional placewinners, with a majority of the team's points
coming from sprints. Freshman Mary Dell (Boiling Springs, Pa./Boiling
Springs) finished in second place for the 400-meter dash with a time of 58.60 seconds,
while fellow freshman Shannon Hare (Middletown/Middletown) finished in fifth
place with a time of 1:00.14 that gave Shippensburg a total of 12 team points
for the event.
In the 55-meter dash, sophomore Siobhan Richards (York Haven, Pa./York
Haven) finished in sixth place with a time of 7.38 seconds, while Dell clocked in
with an eighth-place time of 7.59 seconds. The duo combined for four points.
Meanwhile, Dell combined with Hare and senior Julie Riccardo (Exton/Bishop
McDevitt) to finish fifth through seventh place in the 200-meter dash to
give Shippensburg a total of nine points for the event.
Sophomore Kristina Grussenmeyer (Holland/Council Rock South) finished in
fifth place for the indoor pentathlon, while fellow sophomore Ashleigh
Helfrick (Greencastle/James Buchanan) finished in seventh place. Helfrick has now
placed in both years of competition for the indoor pentathlon, as she recorded
a fourth place finish in last year's Championship.
Two Lady Raiders combined for a five-way tie for fourth place in the high
jump, giving Shippensburg a total of six points. Senior Monica Speca
(Mechanicsburg, Pa./Trinity) and freshman Casey Drummond (Maple Glen/Upper Dublin) each recorded
jumps of 5-feet 3.25 inches, six inches behind first-place finisher Chelsea
Morse of Lock Haven. Speca finished in second place in last year's long jump
event.
Other placewinners for Shippensburg included senior Stacey Wilcher
(Harleysville/Souderton),
who finished in sixth place for the pole vault, and freshman Krysten
Goetter (Ambler/Hatboro-Horsham), who finished in sixth place in the shot put.
In day one action from Saturday, Shippensburg's only first-place finish of
the championships came from senior Megan Schweighofer (Tyler Hill/Honesdale),
who won the weight throw with a heave of 52-feet 2.75-inches that gave Shippensburg
10 team points. Also for Shippensburg, the distance and 800-meter relay teams
both finished in seventh place, recording two points for each event.
The NCAA Indoor Championships will be held at the Reggie Lewis Track and
Athletic Center in Boston, Mass. on March 10 and 11.
