SELINSGROVE, Pa. - The Shippensburg University women’s indoor track and field team added two more school records to its growing list of achievements in the 2007-08 season, eclipsing the previous bests in the 800-meter dash and the 4x800-meter relay on Saturday evening at the Susquehanna Open held inside Garrett Sports Complex.

Freshman Abby Huber (Mechanicsburg/Cumberland Valley) established the new school record in the 800-meter dash with a time of 2:15.28, while sophomore Mary Dell (Boiling Springs/Boiling Springs) came within two one-hundredths of a second from winning the event herself.

Ironically, Dell had originally broken the school record on January 19 at the Bucknell Heptagonal with a time of 2:17.26, so both competitors on Saturday broke the previous school record in addition to shattering the previous record time achieved at Garrett Sports Complex.

Additionally, this is the second school record set by Dell this season that Huber has later broken. The same day that Dell set the previous school record in the 800-meter dash on January 19, Huber shattered Dell’s mark in the 1,000-meter run by more than four seconds.

Not to be outdone, freshman Jamie McCollum (Duncannon/Susquenita) finished fourth in the event by recording a time of 2:22.11.

Highlighting other competition, the 4x800-meter relay team anchored by Huber won the event by more than 13 seconds over Dickinson College with a time of 9:32.53. The mark becomes a new school record because the original record was converted from a hand time, and this effort was digitally recorded and verified with Fully Automatic Timing.

In throwing events, sophomore Krysten Goetter (Ambler/Hatboro-Horsham) finished fifth in the weight throw with a heave of 44’ 6.75”. She also finished sixth in the shot put with a throw of 37’ 1.75”.

In the 3,000-meter run, junior Samantha Jones (Chambersburg/Chambersburg) finished second with a time of 10:34.26 while freshman Katie Frey (Frederick, Md./Thomas Johnson) took third in 10:36.22.

Junior Siobahn Richards (York Haven/York Haven) placed second in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.35 seconds, while sophomore Shannon Hare (Middletown/Middletown) finished fourth in 7.52 seconds. Richards also took second place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.69 seconds.

Four other Lady Raiders recorded third-place finishes for the evening. Senior Casey Drummond (Maple Glen/Upper Dublin) tied for third place in the high jump with a leap of 5’ 1.75” while freshman Crista Raymond (Hershey/Milton Hershey) tied for third place in the pole vault with a vault of 10-feet.

Freshman Rebekah Newhart (Muncy/Hughesville) placed third in the triple jump with a leap of 36-feet, 0.75 inches, while sophomore Michele Morcom (Moscow/Western Wayne) took third place in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.59 seconds.

In the 400-meter dash, Shippensburg had three freshmen earn consecutive finishes from fifth through seventh place just 35-hundredths of a second apart.

Freshman Sara Wlazelek (Lenhartsville/Kutztown) took fifth place with a time of 1:02.28, while freshman Donnel Hodges (Camp Hill/Cedar Cliff) finished in 1:02.55. Freshman Amanda Dubs (Dover/Northeastern) rounded out the group with a time of 1:02.63.

Meanwhile, the 1,600-meter relay team finished third with a time of 4:07.83.

Shippensburg will compete in one more event before the PSAC Indoor Championships begin March 1 in East Stroudsburg. Next weekend, the Lady Raiders will travel to Ohio to compete in the Kent State Tune Up.
