Feb. 7, 2007

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Junior Mark Anderson (Nanty Glo/Central Cambria) and senior Monica Speca (Mechanicsburg/Trinity) were named PSAC Men's and Women's Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, on Tuesday. It is the first time this season that an athlete from Shippensburg has received the conference's top weekly honor.

Anderson and Speca were both honored for their efforts at the DeSchriver Invitational hosted by East Stroudsburg on Saturday.

Anderson placed first in the shot put with an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 53-feet, 7 1⁄4-inches, good enough for the top performance in the PSAC this season. He also established a new school record by nearly four inches and ranks 12th in Division II.

Anderson also finished second in the weight throw. His mark of 51-feet, 7 1⁄4-inches ranks second among PSAC competitors this year.

Speca became the fourth PSAC female to provisionally qualify for the NCAA championships in the high jump. At the DeSchriver Invitational, she won the event by two inches over Leslie Martin of East Stroudsburg. Speca and Martin share the conference’s top performance which is tied for 13th among national competitors.

The Shippensburg track and field returns to action on Saturday at the PSAC East Indoor Challenge at Kutztown. The event is scheduled to begin at 12:30 pm.
