Jan. 31, 2008
NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Shippensburg women’s track and field team has been ranked fifth in this week’s edition of the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II poll. After not being ranked last week, the Lady Raiders climbed to the No. 5 spot in the nation and are the highest-ranked school in the East Region.
Shippensburg has broken four school records, including one record twice, while having competed in just five meets this season.
Six days ago, the distance medley relay record was broken by the quartet of freshman Abby Huber (Mechanicsburg/Cumberland Valley), sophomore Shannon Hare (Middletown/Middletown), freshman Jamie McCollum (Duncannon/Susquenita) and sophomore Mary Dell (Boiling Springs/Boiling Springs) in 12:09.46.
The mark is an NCAA provisional qualifying time and is just over two seconds short of the PSAC record in the event.
At the Bucknell Heptagonal, the 1,600-meter relay team of Hare, freshman Erica Hess (Selinsgrove/Selinsgrove), Dell and freshman Laura Henzy (Langhorne/Neshaminy) finished the event in 3:59.58 to set a school mark.
Additionally, Huber dominated the 1,000-meter run with a school-record time of 2:57.18 that broke Dell's school record that had been set in the season-opening meet by more than four seconds. Dell broke the school record in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:17.26 that shattered Lindsey Incorvati's school record by more than one second.
Ashland (Ohio), of the GLIAC, is ranked first in the nation, while the top five is rounded out by Missouri Southern State-Joplin, Hillsdale, Lewis and Shippensburg. Slippery Rock is the second-highest ranked school in the PSAC at No. 8.
After back-to-back weekends in competition at Bucknell, Shippensburg will travel to East Stroudsburg, site of the PSAC championships, next Saturday to compete in the DeSchriver Invitational. Competition gets underway at 10:00 a.m.
